SOLIDIFYING THE CLOUD: How Cloud Services are Maturing and Becoming Mainstream

Joanna Cassey, Senior Corporate Counsel, Hewlett Packard Limited, United Kingdom

Some say that what is so incredible about the cloud computing phenomenon is the speed at which it has taken hold. What may be interesting to learn is that cloud computing was first mooted in the 1960’s as a concept based on utility, or grid computing. It was John McCarthy who said that ‘computation may someday be organized as a public utility’. It would however take until the late 1990s for the term ‘cloud computing’ to appear as a euphemism for such utility computing.

Joanna Cassey joined Hewlett Packard last November from salesforce.com, where she spent three and a half years supporting the sales growth in the UK and Ireland. Joanna has spent the past 10 years working as an in house lawyer in the IT and Telecoms industries and is now providing legal support to Hewlett Packard’s new and developing Enterprise Security Products.
