Managing Legal & Compliance Department in a Medium-Sized Company

May 2017ManagementRetail

Abstract

Whether a company is a middle-sized company is comparable and judgmental based on its business scale and number of employees in a country and in an industry. Usually a combined legal and compliance department is responsible for two major modules, i.e., Legal and Compliance Management. Compliance Investigation can also be in the same department but sometimes it doesn’t because it is more independent. It is possible that such a department will consist of lawyers and non-lawyers or some functional part time colleagues in the small countries if the department is responsible for a region. In China, “compliance” usually refers to anti-corruption, antitrust, anti-money laundry and may include data protection as decided by a company. Data protection has become a hot topic due to more legislation in China in the recent years, but it is not often the case for companies to put it under “compliance” sphere for the time being.
